A week after earthquakes ripped through the Himalayas, #PlacesKTM has been focusing strongly on where help is needed and how to get it there. In collaboration with @Relief Team Kalosisa, Places has been providing immediate relief to affected communities; supplying food and shelter and offering manpower as needed. The communities we have reached include Sankhu, Nuwakot, Ramkot, Majhuwa gaun, Bhatte dada and many more. We were also the first small business in Thamel to reopen our doors and keep our patrons connected.
Now we have turned our minds to HOW. How best can we support quake-affected communities for the long term?
The value of a stable home is priceless. It gives us peace of mind, a space to nurture families and connect with our neighbours. Our direct engagement with communities over the past week has shown us that quake-affected inhabitants are ready to re-establish stability in their communities. What's more - inhabitants of quake-affected communities have the skills to build their homes!!! The greatest need for these communities is long-term housing and ensuring money contributed for relief is directed into sustainable housing projects as soon as possible.
Places has identified community organisations who are concentrating their resources towards earthbag housing. Earthbag housing uses everyday resources, such as rice bags, cement and barbed wire, to build safe homes with drainage. Places is launching a fundraiser to collect donations for building tools and construction supplies in support of these projects.
Our intention is to make fundraising fun, so we plan to host an event or two over the coming weeks. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for upcoming events. In the meantime, we are accepting cash donations.
If you are interested in donating, drop down to Places and leave what you can offer in the donations box on our counter, or contact us via e-mail email@example.com or Private Message us through Facebook.
If you would like to leave clothing, you may also drop off your old rags in our restaurant. If you would like to offer your time for some physical labor, we can put you in touch with organisations running these projects.
